Microsoft Office 365 “Cannot Create User” Workaround

So you just made a new user in Microsoft Office 365 (or O365) and you got the dreaded “Cannot Create User” error. Or maybe someone just sent you to the internet to search for “I can’t create a new user” or “I keep getting a correlation error!!” There are different issues that can cause these errors, but here is a workaround to keep you in business until you or someone higher up the food chain can fix it.

First, if you’ve just finished creating the user and just got the error, click on “My Profile” in the top right hand corner to get out of the user creation page. Do not worry, your user has not been erased.

Next, click on “Admin” near the center of the page to return to the Admin panel.

Once you’re back in the Admin panel, click on users beneath Management.

In the search bar, on the far right hand side of the screen enter your user’s name and click the magnifying glass to search for the user.

Once your user is located, click on the checkbox to the left of the user’s name.

Above “view” you should see a link titled “Reset Password.” Click on it.

In the next page, ensure that the email with the password reset token will be delivered to your email address and then click the “Reset Password” button underneath.

Once you have sent the password reset command you should be shown the new temporary password. If not, it will be delivered to the email address you specified a moment earlier.

Next, you’ll want to open up a new browser, and then browse to

Once there, log in with the user’s username and temporary password.

Once you sign in you will be prompted to enter the temporary password (old password) and then enter and confirm a new password.

Congratulations, your user has been rescued from a position where he has no password to access his email account or ability to reset his password on his own!
